How do i become an air traffic controller?

-how do i become an air traffic controller?..how long does it take?..do they assign where you will work?..or can you atleast work in the same state..and how much are they typically paid..thankkssThe FAA trains you, then employs you - Compulsory retirement age 55 -

Initial assignment is depending on where controllers are needed -

Two main types of controllers -

(1) Airport traffic control towers or (2) Air Route Traffic Control Centers -

Example - LAX airport tower, or Palmdale ARTCC -

Then with seniority, say 3 to 5 years (?) you can request transfer where you like -

No ideas (and numbers) about pay, but they are well paid. Not to worry -

It is a Federal Employee position - with all the benefits -

It used to be that ATC controllers could fly for free (cockpit jump seat) -

This was discontinued after 9/11 -

I have read somewhere that this privilege will be soon reinstated -

Remember - do not snooze in your tower at night...

Answer, if a... darn airplane calls...!My son is currently in training for ATC. You can become one in through one of three paths: 1) apply directly to the FAA (doesn't happen often), 2) become a controller through the military, or 3) go to an approved FAA two or four year school program. Through #2 or 3, you must take and pass the appropriate classes, and obtain a certain degree of practical training. You may then qualify to apply with the FAA to take their academy program in Oklahoma City. You must be 30 or younger to apply.

Once you pass the academy, your assignment will depend on current openings and your particular interests. If you choose the tower cabs and ground control, you have more flexibility to move around from place to place. If you choose the air route traffic control (ARTCC), you will probably spend your entire career in one facility.

The median salary for ATC is over $100,000 a year.
I don't know. Use Google.
