-I want a part time job at a large FBO where i'll be working towards commercial certificate next school year.
I am rarely qualified for jobs listed on the employment section of their website (mechanic, charter pilot, etc), as I'll be a college freshman.
What is the appropriate way to ask for a job if there aren't any listed openings?
Thanks!
By the way I'm willing to do any sort of work.If you're taking lessons there, start asking! They should appreciate having somebody who understands at least a little of their system. Maybe there's a part-time opening as parts girl, or working the counter on weekends.
This is how people started in my day, good luck.Nearly all FBO's employ people for office work, janitorial service, customer service, line service (fueling / cleaning), marshaling aircraft and other ramp work, product sales, bookkeeping, scheduling, website maintenance, mowing grass, and many other positions. Quite often multiple skills are required. Experience in any of these categories will help. A general knowledge of aircraft and aviation would be an asset too and you can learn a lot for free with some effort. Getting a personal recommendation from someone working for an FBO would be your best chance of at least getting an interview.
Send them your resume, and state in your cover letter that you are available for any position.
That's how I got my first job in aviation, it was a complete shot in the dark.
